Why You Can Pressure Wash Concrete (But Not Usually Asphalt)

Uncategorized / July 25, 2025

Pressure washing is a powerful way to clean outdoor surfaces, but not all materials can handle the same treatment. Concrete and asphalt may look similar, but they react very differently under high-pressure water. At BCS Services, we know when to bring out the heavy equipment—and when a gentler approach is needed.

Concrete: Built for Pressure

Concrete is a dense, durable surface that holds up well to high-pressure cleaning. It’s ideal for areas like:

  • Sidewalks

  • Curbs

  • Driveways

  • Parking garage floors

Because concrete is so hard, it can withstand pressure levels of 3,000–4,000 PSI, which helps remove dirt, oil stains, gum, and mildew without damaging the surface.

⚠️ Asphalt: Handle with Care

Asphalt, on the other hand, is softer and more flexible, made from a mixture of bitumen and aggregate. Using high-pressure water on asphalt can:

  • Break apart the surface

  • Dislodge gravel

  • Speed up erosion of the binding oils

That’s why we typically avoid traditional pressure washing on asphalt. Instead, we use low-pressure cleaning methods, hot water, and chemical pre-treatments to clean the surface without causing damage.
